Title:
Fuming pot of green and yellow lead glaze: 16th-17th century
Description:
Fuming pot of green and yellow lead glazed Surrey / Hampshire border ware. The narrow necked jar has cylindrical and dumb-bell shaped apertures and the pedestal foot has a semi-circular opening on one side. Two opposing loop handles extend outwards from the basal edge of the jar. The form is variously described as a fuming or 'stink pot' because the jar held aromatic herbs and spices which, when warmed by lighted charcoal, wafted pleasant smells around the chamber.
